Lovefast -3: Right hand

Lovefast prayer and action campaign from Mahabba Network

Lovefast -3: Right hand

By Phil S from Mahabba's Network Team
Inspired by today's entry in 30 Days of Prayer, but with a UK twist!

Daily verse

‘Be careful not to practise your righteousness in front of others to be seen by them. If you do, you will have no reward from your Father in heaven.

‘So when you give to the needy, do not announce it with trumpets, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and on the streets, to be honoured by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your giving may be in secret. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.
— Matthew 6:1-4 New International Version - UK (NIVUK)

Thought for the day

Right hand

Stewardship’s 40 days of Lent generosity campaign inspired and influenced Lovefast.

We are told: it is more blessed to give than receive - and we have a unique opportunity to bless and be blessed during this holy month (for Muslims) of Ramadan.

Acts of generosity can have great impact. Hence our emphasis on prayer and action. Or ‘practising righteouness’ as Jesus puts it.

We focus our time and effort during these 30 days of prayer on both prayer and action.

It is a secret, personal thing - an attitude as much as anything. Don’t blow your own trumpet. Don’t let your right hand know what the left hand is doing.

But there’s the rub... we do want to engage with each other to encourage participation... so please do tell us your stories.

Lovefast is after all trying to be a social media campaign so that it can grow and increase impact!

Lost, asleep & on the wrong path - a blog from Mahabba Network

God is moving among Muslims

This is a real-life story of recent events from friends of Mahabba Network. Names and details have been deliberately removed to protect the identity of those involved, but praise God - he is working in the lives of Muslims to reveal Jesus!

Lost, asleep & on the wrong path

Hello everyone, I was born in Iran. I thank God that he hasn’t left me lost and asleep on the wrong path. From childhood I was brought up as a strict Shia Muslim however I always felt weak. I used to pray and worship but I wasn’t able to reach God in the way I wanted to.

I was always looking for a God of love and friendship and so finally I decided to look for God in another way. For this reason I started looking into Sufi Islam. I felt I was lost and I was looking to find the right way. Many times I went to Sufi meetings however I was still not satisfied.

When I had a problem with my job, I decided to go into a church and light a candle. After a few days, the problem was solved. A short time later, when a different problem arose, I had to leave my country.

When I arrived in England, I got to know some new Iranian Christian friends and I got a lot of information from them. Little by little, I began to feel that following Jesus was a better way and understand that Christianity is a complete way to reach God, until God accepted me and I came to faith in Jesus.

I understood that all my life I had been following the wrong way and that there was no other way than following Jesus to reach the God of love because all the other ways put distance between me and God. However, following Jesus enabled me to become a friend of God. Now I am a son of God and he has become my Father – I’m not a slave of God.

The teachings of Jesus have taught me about life and how to live in love. He taught me how to relate to people around me, who I used to think were my enemies, and be at peace with them; how to live in freedom and help others to live freely too; how to find when Satan was working against me; how to put to death my selfish pride; that God is a God of love we can relate to, not a God of fear.

He answered my childlike questions and gave me a new outlook. Through my words, those who oppose the Gospel can understand and get to know God, whether they’ve had information before or not. The Lord’s return is near and he has given us a great responsibility to go and make disciples of all the nations, in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit.

Lord Jesus, I confess that I’m a sinner. I know I cannot attain salvation and become righteous through my own power or good works. I believe you were killed on the cross for my sins, were buried in the grave and after three days you rose again from the dead.

I believe that you’re alive and have the authority to forgive my sins and count me righteous before you. I surrender my whole heart and life to you. Thank you for hearing my prayer, Amen.

God is moving among Muslims

This is a real-life story of recent events from one of the local Mahabba groups in the Network. Names and details have been deliberately removed to protect the identity of those involved, but praise God - he is working in the lives of Muslims to reveal Jesus!

Our contact in a church in London, tells us what happened...

Hope & healing

About 75 people came to our church event for people of other faith backgrounds. It was lovely to see about fifteen Muslim women there in their hijabs. Other less religious Muslims were also there and many Hindus. All invited by Christian friends.

The whole evening was very enjoyable and peaceful. People stayed for a long time even though we were very challenging in plainly sharing the Gospel with them, but in a gracious way.

We began with refreshments, and a fun quiz. This was followed by a free halal and vegetarian meal. After this we gave the quiz results and prizes.

We then gave a fifty minute presentation on the theme of hope. People listened attentively to someone from a Muslim background sharing his testimony of coming to faith, boldly and lovingly.

There was a short talk on the reasons for our Christian hope. This was followed by an invitation for prayer for healing. Two healing testimonies were shared, one of a healing from a cyst. Later a lady came for prayer with the same condition.

About 25 to 30 people came forward for prayer for healing. There was a queue!

One person said their post cancer operation pain had left. Another who had pain in their foot said it was gone.

All the guests stayed well past the finish time as we ended the evening with coffee and cake.

Lots of people came at the end and said how much they had enjoyed the programme. We are now planning our next event!

John, the coordinator, tells us what happened...

Surprising connections

The Mahabba Basingstoke group ran a very successful Easter Party for Muslims in the town recently.

It was at the request of a local Muslim association.

Others invited did not accept or were unable to come, but we did generate some interest and enabled other Christians to do something more to engage with Muslim colleagues or neighbours.

We explained Easter using language that would resonate and help generate discussion.

As we led a tour around a local church as part of the event, there were lots of questions about the furniture, stained glass windows (popular) and especially about the display of the Lord’s Prayer, Ten Commandments and Creed.

We discovered unrecognised links – children knew each other from school and an older Muslim mum had come to the church carer & toddler group, so was able to recommend it to others.

Some discovered shared sporting interests, so we were able to develop friendships and opportunities to meet more often.

We continue with Scriptural Reasoning, and have found the newly-published Grove booklet very helpful and thought provoking.

We hope to discuss this method of building friendships and sharing faith more at the Regional Gathering in Gloucester!

Spiritual re-orientation

katie-moum-446408.jpg

spiritual re-orientation

In this blog from Phil, he encourages us to use Lent as a time to strengthen ourselves spiritually so we can reach out to others more effectively. There are also ways you can engage practically at the end.

A blog for lent

Christians fast during Lent 1 and Muslims during the month of Ramadan2. And for the contemporary generation, some form of detox has also become popular.

But Lent is not just about giving up chocolate or cheese. Or other forms of abstinence.

Jesus talked about not making a song and dance about fasting, but it being personal & secret.

But when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face, that your fasting may not be seen by others, but by your Father who is in secret.
— Matthew 6:17-18

The rewards may indeed be physical benefits such as losing weight, feeling healthier, even food tasting better afterwards.

But it can also have a deeper, more hidden, impact.

Fasting is the first principle of medicine; fast and see the strength of the spirit reveal itself
— Jelauddin Rumi

Fasting can also help us to re-orientate ourselves spiritually, strengthen our spirits and refresh us and help us regain that lost sense of purpose.

And your Father who sees in secret will reward you

Action

Use Lent as an opportunity to draw near to God and strengthen your own commitment to Jesus.

Follow a daily reading scheme like:

And then use Ramadan as an opportunity to pray:

Real value

One of my friend’s moved recently so I went to visit him. He is originally from a Middle Eastern country. He was brought up as a Muslim.

After a while on Google Maps and a few calls on my mobile I found my friend. We walked to the new place. I took off my shoes as not to spoil the carpet.

My friend showed me around his new accommodation. The flat was pristine and still smelled of fresh paint.

A multitude of ornaments on the window sill sparkled in the morning sunshine. Everything was in its right place - including a meticulously arranged shoe cupboard.

I was offered a cup of tea, then I was shown the pictures of the flat before he moved in. It was unrecognisable from the place I was sitting in.

The carpets were dirty and walls were full of holes. My friend explained that he had scraped off all the old wallpaper, filled the holes in the walls, repainted and scrubbed the carpets.

The ornaments and the pictures had come from a charity shop and been brought to life with some vigorous polishing.

The sofas came from a friend who was storing some surplus furniture in his garage. The place looked very bright and inviting.

He then told me that people from his culture were very proud and looked down on having anything that wasn’t brand new. He gave me the following example.

If someone was cold and you lent them a jacket - you would never wear it again after it had been returned.

He informed me that it was only after he started to follow Jesus as part of a church community that he was able to get a handle on his pride, accept help from others, value things that were not brand new and not care so much about the negative comments of others.

10/10 Prayer & Fasting for the Muslim World

10/10 Prayer & Fasting for the Muslim World

An initiative by Vision 5:9 calling Christians to pray and fast for 10 years that 10% of Muslims would come to faith.

There are no measurements, just a simple call for continuous prayer facilitated by a calendar for agencies and individuals to sign up.

Vision 5:9 is a gathering of mission agencies focused on seeing Revelation 5:9 come into being. This initiative was born out of a gathering in October 2017 named, Abide Bear Fruit - inspired by the great promise of John 15.

The calendar can be found here:

Quenching hunger

We were inspired by another Mahabba group and are hoping to put on a discussion with some mosques inviting believers and Muslims.

At the event, the Qur’an is read then discussed, then the Bible is read and discussed.

We are hoping this will provide a chance for Muslims to ask questions and open up the word.

I have spoken to two mosque leaders about it: one was keen, one is speaking to their imam about it.

The one that is keen also seems very spiritually hungry and a couple of us have done some one-to-one Bible study with him and have given him scriptures.

We are praying that he will come to know Jesus and lead his congregation to follow him.

Please pray that the practical details all get sorted and that many come to know Jesus.

He is moving

I was delighted to be invited to the birthday party.

Oz was a Syrian asylum seeker. I met him just at the time his application was accepted and he promptly moved away with his family into a big city

In our small town he had found Christian friends and even attended some church events. I visited him in his new home.

On the one hand it was gloriously multicultural and on the other hand it was not a nice neighbourhood. I knew it, he knew it.

I put him in touch with a nearby Christian bookshop which I understood to be run by a Pakistani believer and was pleased to hear later that he had visited it.

Then came the invitation for his two year old’s birthday party. It was quite an event. And the bookshop manager had been invited too.

He was not a Pakistani at all but fellow Syrian, young in the faith and keen as mustard. That was more than I had asked or thought.

Then came the news that Oz had found a better place to live and was moving out to a suburb. I was glad that his family had a nicer home, but could I put him in touch with local Christian friends?

I spoke to the bookshop man:

Oz is moving. This is his new address.

The bookshop man said:

Really? I live just round the corner from him!

Wow. God is on his case. Hallelujah!

Book review: 'Alabaster', Chris Aslan

Book review: 'Alabaster', Chris Aslan

Review by

Riz, from Across Woking (Mahabba Woking)

What did you think?

I've just finished the book by Chris Aslan which I really enjoyed.

I found it to be an easy read and what I liked most was that it was so good at transporting you to a different culture yet you were still able to identify with the characters in the story because of the similarities we share through the human condition.

We can all identify with the emotional struggles these women face in terms of rejection, the pressure to conform, shame, physical hardship and much more.

The joy and turning point in this book is when we are led to the hope that exists in the teacher's grace and gentleness and not through the religiosity of the village elders advocating striving through works for the Lord’s favour.

It’s not overtly Christian, but as a believer I can see how this book could benefit readers by highlighting the difference between living life with a heavy yoke as opposed to the invitation to live life with a yoke that is light and free from burden.

It’s a great read for young women (Muslim or other) who do not yet know their true position in Christ.

As a believer, I enjoyed making the connections between the characters in the story with the Biblical characters and how subtle the writer was in introducing them into this story.

Europe’s Growing Muslim Population from Pew Research Center

Image: Pew Resarch Center

Image: Pew Resarch Center

The Pew Research Center continues its research on the growth of the Muslim population in Europe

Muslims are projected to increase as a share of Europe’s population – even with no future migration.

Here are the main headlines:

  1. Even if all migration into Europe stopped immediately, the Muslim population would still be expected to rise from the current level of 4.9% to 7.4% by the year 2050

  2. It all refugee flows stopped as of mid-2016, but regular migration continued (migration of those who come for reasons other than seeking asylum), Muslims could reach 11.2% of the population in 2050

  3. If the record flow of refugees between 2014 and 2016 continued, Muslims could make up 14% of Europe’s population by 2050

  4. Refugee flows of the last few years are extremely high compared with the historical average in recent decades, and already have begun to decline

  5. Europe’s non-Muslims are projected to decline in total number in each of the scenarios above

Fundraising Assistant, Mahabba Network, Derby

sticker-mule-197268.jpg

Fundraising Assistant, Mahabba Network, Derby

Introduction

At a glance

Part time
£17,000 pro rata
Derby

The Mahabba Network is looking for a personable, organised, technology-literate individual to assist the Hub Manager (think Operations Manager) with fundraising applications.

You might be a student looking for a bit of work around studies; be interested in getting some experience in charity work or fundraising; or perhaps looking to serve our vision to see Muslims come to know Jesus.

Important note

If you are put off by the idea of fundraising, likening it to grovelling for money, think again. This is an opportunity to learn how to market and promote Mahabba, communicating the needs, benefits and the impact we can make with partners. The skills you will learn and employ are akin to those you would wield marketing in the business sector.

About us

We are a relatively small, young charity, founded in 2012, but with a presence across the UK.

We help everyday Christians engage with Muslims by: facilitating opportunities to pray; increasing understanding of Muslims and Islam; equipping them to share Jesus with Muslims.

We have sown and planted 53 local Mahabba groups (at the time of writing), which gather local Christians from a variety of churches to pray and engage practically. This is the Network that we support and encourage.

We want to continue to engage Christians with the need to pray and share Jesus with Muslims. To do that we want to increase our revenue and ultimately establish a large support base of individual givers.

linkedin-sales-navigator-402868.jpg

Who you will be working with

You will predominantly work with Simon, the Hub Manager, in The Hub office in Derby.

Our Hub is the focal point within the Network for admin, communications, finance and fundraising. Simon facilitates the central admin we need to exist as a registered charity, as well as maintaining the flow of communication with local Mahabba groups.

We try to keep things lightweight structurally to reflect our shape as a network, but focus on efficiency and impact to ensure we use what we have effectively. A lot of our tools and systems are cloud- and app-based, such as MailChimp, Donorfy, Google Apps, WhatsApp and Skype.

You will also cross paths occasionally with other teams, such as the Network Team (made up of our regional reps), local group coordinators and trustees.

We are blessed to share desk space with Community Church Derby and East Midlands Christian Fellowships. We also relate closely to other charities, such as Upbeat Communities and Welcome Churches, so the office is a fun, lively and vibrant place to work.

Responsibilities of the role

  • You will work closely with Simon, create reports and send updates to him
  • You will update the fundraising database, Donorfy, with grant applications
  • You will help Simon prepare and write grant applications to trusts and foundations
  • You will print, package and send off applications by post as well as by e-mail
  • After training, and with ongoing support, you will call individuals to share news and ask whether they would like to support Mahabba financially
  • You will help Simon with fundraiser e-mails via MailChimp, keep donor records up to date and engage with donors when they get in contact
  • You will help Simon with sourcing stories of impact and text and image content for publications
  • Depending on time and your aptitude, you may also help Simon with engaging our audience on social media
jo-szczepanska-57782.jpg

Requirements of the role

  • Use customer relationship management (CRM) software to create reports on fundraising data for the management team on deadline
  • Follow established workflows and processes to produce high-quality, branded materials to be sent out in a timely fashion
  • Able to manage your time and work, balancing getting your tasks done with catching up with Simon and identifying ways we can improve
  • Experience using or adapting to cloud-, app-based software for communications and administration, such as MailChimp and Donorfy
  • You should be able to talk to and e-mail funders, donors and Mahabba people, using a warm, friendly and engaging style
  • Able to receive direction on your work and then work independently, making it your own, solving problems and developing it in line with our overall objectives

Benefits of working with us

  • Experience of fundraising for a Christian charity and operating in the evangelical, faith-sector
  • Experience of working in an office environment with exposure to a range of practical tasks that can help you with your career progression
  • Flexibility to arrange your work schedule to suit your other commitments, by mutual agreement with Simon
  • An easily-accessible work location, ideal if you live in Derby or Nottingham
  • Contact with colleagues from Community Church Derby and East Midlands Christian Fellowships and opportunities to interact with Upbeat Communities and Welcome Churches
  • Opportunities to take on further responsibilities and work for the right person

Location & salary

  • This is a fixed term project until 31 August 2018 in the first instance, and depending on further funding
  • Location: The Riverside Centre, Riverside Court, Pride Park, Derby, DE24 8HY
  • 1.5 days per week, with flexibility
  • £17,000 pro rata

Closing date

12:00pm Friday 15 December 2017

Interview date

w/c Monday 1 January 2018 TBC

Anticipated Start Date

w/c Monday 8 January 2018 TBC

  • Submit your documents no later than 12:00pm on Friday 15 December 2017

  • Applications will be sifted and if you make it onto the shortlist, you will be called to interview

  • The interview will likely consist of a short practical exercise and a panel interview, held in Derby

Friendship first

For those of you that have completed the Friendship first course, you will know that building relationships and strong friendships with Muslims is often the first step to sharing Jesus with them.

All friendships take time and energy to flourish, but the more Muslims I meet here where I am, the more I see a deep hunger for it and for assurance, support and encouragement.

It has not seemed difficult to find Muslim ladies keen to chat about faith, receive encouraging scripture and to pray with.

For this I am very thankful to God.

Last week I met for a coffee with a Muslim lady and our conversation turned very naturally to our beliefs and purpose in life.

I was able to share the gospel with her and talk about what following Jesus meant to me.

It was a very extraordinary moment in a very ordinary setting, flowing from a very real friendship.

Be energetic in your life of salvation, reverent and sensitive before God. That energy is Gods energy, an energy deep within you, God himself willing and working at what will give him the most pleasure.

Peace

This is a real-life story of recent events from one of the local Mahabba groups in the Network. Names and details have been deliberately removed to protect the identity of those involved, but praise God - he is working in the lives of Muslims to reveal Jesus!

My peace I give you

It is not every day you get to walk along the main road with the chief imam of the town’s most prestigious mosque, but that was my privilege.

We had a great talk.

Along with all the general things, we talked about similarities and differences between our respective faiths.

I discovered he owned a Bible.

At one point we got talking about how proper respect should be shown to the prophets.

When Muslims speak of Jesus they have to say,

Peace be upon him

I told him I could never say that.

How can I wish peace on him? He is the one who promises peace to us. I would rather say, ‘May his peace be upon us’

I took out my wallet and drew out a printed scripture text,

Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid
— John 14:27

It is one of the texts I always have with me because this issue comes up.

Two weeks later he accepted my invitation to have lunch at the church café.

For him it was unanticipated view of church and church people.

Again we talked about lots of things.

At one point we got on to the disobedience of the Prophet Jonah.

The imam talked about all the prophets asking forgiveness.

I pointed out that one never needed to, Jesus Christ who never sinned.

He did not argue. Islam does not disagree.

We are building a friendship. We will see where God takes it. There are more opportunities in round here than meet the eye.
