God is the one who makes things grow

Action & Impact October Update

Autumn is the perfect time to be planting bulbs. Bulbs can seem insignificant, but they are small powerhouses that burst into flower in the spring.

They aren’t difficult to plant, but they’re not planted by accident either. A gardener has spent time thinking about what to plant, preparing the soil, and then actually going out and doing it.

Much like building relationships with our Muslim neighbours and colleagues, bulbs are dormant for some time until the conditions are just right. And then the gardener is rewarded with a riot of colour in all different shapes and sizes.

The Apostle Paul uses a similar analogy in 1 Corinthians 3:6-9.

I planted the seed, Apollos watered it, but God has been making it grow. So neither the one who plants nor the one who waters is anything, but only God, who makes things grow. The one who plants and the one who waters have one purpose, and they will each be rewarded according to their own labour. For we are co-workers in God’s service; you are God’s field, God’s building.

Our actions can seem small. One member of our Mahabba group in Bristol shared this experience:

My friend started a new business, so I asked to visit. One afternoon I turned up. The place was busy; lots of people doing different jobs, making a lot of noise. Talking above the noise, he showed me around and we drank some cardamom flavoured coffee.

Before I visited, I had asked God to give me something to say. Time was slipping by; the noisy atmosphere didn’t seem conducive. I felt God nudge me “Pray a prayer of blessing on his business.” Just at that moment, we moved into a quiet corner. I asked my friend if I could pray a blessing. He was very happy; we opened our hands before God and I asked for success and safety for his business and workers.

This story represents just a small opportunity to build relationships with those Muslims in our local area. But when covered in prayer, and blessed by God, who knows what will grow?

Be reminded today that small, uncomplicated acts of friendship, and consistent prayer, are vital as we share the good news of Jesus.
